New York, March 7, 2013
The New Perspectives Dominican Republic Photo Exhibit, an initiative of GFDD and FUNGLODE, stepped out in high fashion on March 7, 2013, collaborating with the Celia Cruz Foundation to support the 2nd Annual Fundraiser for The DREAM Project, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit serving the educational needs of over 4,000 children and youth born into poverty along the northern coast of the Dominican Republic.
A selection of aerial photography from its photo exhibit, New Perspectives Dominican Republic, was displayed at the event entitled “Sueños 2013: The DREAM Project Benefit,” alongside an exhibit of costumes, shoes and memorabilia presented by the Celia Cruz Foundation in keeping with the evening’s theme: “Honoring the life, music and contribution of Celia Cruz,” commemorating the 10th anniversary of the passing of this pioneer and unforgettable talent.
The photographs chosen to be displayed featured regions in the northern areas of the Dominican Republic, such as Moca and Cabarete, which is where Dream carries out its educational programming. Attendees viewed the exhibit while they enjoyed a lively evening filled with music, cocktails, food and a live and silent auction, which included a 5-night stay at Villa Serena hotel in Samaná, donated by GFDD, among other given prizes .
The benefit took place at El Museo del Barrio, the leading Latino cultural institution in New York City, in order to highlight the rich history and culture shared by all Latinos. Guests of honor included Sully Bonelly, Creative director for Isaac Mizrahi, Red Bull Pro Skater Luis Tolentino and Omer Pardillo Cid, President of The Celia Cruz Foundation and two-time Grammy Award winner.
GFDD’s participation in the event is a result of its interest in supporting quality initiatives contributing to the social and democratic development of the Dominican Republic.
The “New Perspectives: Dominican Republic” is the result of an international interdisciplinary team, including GFDD Executive Director Natasha Despotovic and Dominican-based photographer Anne Casalé, the aerial photographs of scenes throughout the DR show the country in a way that it has never before been seen. The photo book was and still is available for sale at the benefit with all proceeds going to The DREAM Project.
